Bowman Picture Card Collectors Club
You may have noticed a small red circular seal on the back of some old Bowman sportscards, and if you're like me you probably never paid it much attention. I just recently realized that the seal is advertising the "Bowman Picture Card Collectors Club" which was used by the company to promote various Bowman products.
The Bowman Picture Card Collectors Club even published a newsletter that covered upcoming Bowman product releases, and articles that dispensed valuable advice about the sportscard hobby of the time. The newsletter was appropriately titled "The Collector". One of the more popular features was a Q&A column with the editor called "Ask Uncle Bob" in which collectors could write in and have their questions about the hobby answered. I've heard that members of the club even received a cool little membership card, which I'm sure would be quite valuable on todays market although I've never see one or even a newsletter.
Supposedly, each issue of the newsletter stated: "The Collector Dedicated to: Child, Church, Home, School, Community through Cartophily". It contained a lot of material aimed towards children, but the newsletter also covered topics for the more advanced collectors of the time. Uncle Bob gave mentions in his column about Charles Bray and Jefferson Burdick and the American Card Catalog.
Somewhere, I bet there is someone who owns a lot of stuff from the Bowman Picture Card Collectors Club, including some of the interesting old newsletters.
