Unopened Box

When referring to sports cards, a "box" is a full container of unopened packs. The most common types of boxes are called "wax boxes", this is due to the traditional wax pack, although these days most boxes are not really wax boxes because there are no more wax packs being made. However, the hobby still likes to call unopened boxes "wax boxes".

Unopened boxes come in all kinds of forms now, but from the 1970s to around 1994, most brands of sports cards came in thirty-six pack wax boxes and occasionally in rack pack boxes. Unopened boxes of sports cards have always been favorites of some collectors. It's probably the chance of finding something good inside, or just leaving the box sealed as an attractive display item that makes people collect unopened boxes. Some collectors will open a box as soon as they get it in their hands, while other collectors choose to keep their boxes unopened for eternity!

As I said, there are several types of unopened packs in the trading card hobby today. The best known and most often referred to type of pack is called a wax box. The term wax box is a generic term in the hobby, even if the packs inside aren't "wax packs" anymore.
