I had a question through email recently about 1991 Topps Desert Shield baseball cards. The man had been in the military in 1991, during Operation Desert Shield, and he obtained some unopened packs while he was in the service. His question was about value and where to sell them. My reply to him is below:

Well, they are valuable. You might want to check eBay current and completed listings and see if any packs have sold recently. The problem with selling them as-is though, is that some collectors are suspicious about authenticity because the packs were evidently easy to put together. To get the most money for them, you’d probably want to send them to a 3rd party grader/authentication company such as PSA or another reputable company.

The gold chain, the awesome stache, the chest hair, his whole mystique. Jay Baller was a true Wrigley legend. Baller was too big of a baller to attend college. Instead he was drafted by the Phillies in the 4th round. He made his Major League debut in 1982 pitching a perfect inning against the Pirates.

However, from then on, his ERA and ego went up, while his career went down. Baller wouldn’t make his next appearance in the big leagues until 1985 with the Cubs. Baller posted a career 5.24 ERA and was out of baseball by 1992.

The back of his 1988 Topps baseball card spelled nothing but success.

“Jay was a 1979 graduate of Canby Union High School where he played baseball and basketball. Also played Little League and Babe Ruth ball.”

If you’re a Major Leaguer and your baseball card says you played Little League, you better have a fall back plan. Apparently Baller’s backup plan wasn’t exactly legal…

According to the Reading Eagle newspaper:

“Jay Baller, a Reading Baseball Hall of Fame member, was arrested after authorities received reports of Baller and other men using drugs and playing with a weapon. He was arrested after city police found cocaine, a loaded handgun and $15,000 in cash in his vehicle. Baller said he was going to use the money to clear up some tax problems.”

For those of us that didn’t grow up in ’50s or ’60s, it’s hard to imagine that Willie Mays was once so carefree.

In recent years, The Say Hey Kid has become The Say Nay Kid when it comes to signing autographs.

“The random fan who approaches Mays expecting The Say Hey Kid might very well be surprised to find more of an edge to him,” wrote Phil Taylor, in a July 2008 Sports Illustrated article.
